"Brutus" is a coming-of-age film about two peasant kids caught in the illegal logging trade, the very thing that is destroying their ancestral lands. Out of poverty, Payang and Adag agree to smuggle wood for loggers in order to earn a meager amount of money. The job requires them to journey to the lowlands through a dangerous river, hiding the wood underneath a raft, a trip that takes at least four days to make. As they get farther away from the mountains, they discover a world so much different from theirs, a world ruled by politics and the greed of men.
"Brutus", directed by Tara Illenberger recently won a Bamboo Camera Award given by Kidlat Tahimik himself. It also got four awards at the 2008 Cinemalaya Film festival: Jury Prize, Best Cinematography (for Jay Abello), Best Supporting Actor (for Yul Servo)and Best in Music (for Joey Ayala). It was also the recipient of the NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) Award at the Hawii International Film Festival and the Best Asian Film Award at the Brussels International Independent Film Festival.
